Care for Puppies & Kittens
It's an exciting day when you get to bring a new puppy or kitten home? This cute, cuddly new family member probably makes everyone who interacts with them smile.
Fun as this time may be, you'll also have some serious healthcare business to take care of during your new pet's first year.
Your vet will create a custom healthcare plan to meet your pet's specific needs during their first year, and provide you with lots of guidance and support along the way.
Your Pet’s First Appointment
Ideally, puppies should come in for their first veterinary appointment at about 6 weeks of age, and kittens around 8 weeks.
Your pet will receive a complete physical examination to assess their overall health during this initial visit. We'll check for external parasites and look for signs of congenital defects.
We will also administer deworming medications for hookworms and roundworms, in addition to the first round of kitten or puppy vaccinations.
More About Vaccines & Prevention
Finally, we will conduct a blood test for kittens to check for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus.
Followup Appointments
Between the ages of 6 and 16 weeks, puppies should attend 3 to 4 veterinary appointments. These visits give our vets the opportunity to assess your pet's overall health and to administer vaccines on schedule.
